That, combined with the way Mello speaks and his expressions, makes it easy for Lance to understand the progression from place to place and the kind of motivation a child would have to get themselves out of a bad situation when given the chance. That motivation--or desperation--makes them an easy target, which is something commonly exploited.
But he's reserving judgement on that just yet, although combined with the entire reason Mello wanted to speak with him in the first place and the being trained to solve crimes doesn't exactly paint a promising picture.
